“When you're looking at Palestine now and just imagining what it's like for generations to come, for the descendants of people who have been through that kind of horror and displacement. ..”

A colleague of mine (we are professors at a local university) told me about an assignment he gave his class. Students were to interview people of another culture to introduce them to the idea of context. But most every student came back at my colleague with: I don’t know anyone from another culture. Everyone I know is from my group!

Though this might speak to cultural homogeneity, or a generation unable to operate except virtually, or maybe just plain laziness, it also speaks to New Orleans’ demographics, which is mostly black and white. Although Vietnamese Americans make up slightly less than three percent of the local population (a recent census counts approximately 33,000 Vietnamese statewide), their presence is felt in the labor force, as well as in the plethora of Vietnamese restaurants, a staple of this city’s cuisine. Vietnamese communities have flourished in the West and East Bank since 1975 when the Catholic dioceses of Louisiana became active in the resettlement of Vietnamese who fled their country following the capture of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, by North Vietnam on April 30, 1975. This event led to the reunification of the country under communist rule, as well as the end of the Vietnam War.
